5. The Madison

Set neatly amongst East London's progressive docklands The Madison is set to become a 53-storey residential giant....

Twinned with its fellow residential Super Scraper, Newfoundland, The Madison looks truly awesome. Its thin hexagonal prism design will rise to 187m! Inhabitants of The Madison will be in for a treat as the luxury flats boast private residents’ club on the 16th floor with lounge bar, gym, meeting and screening rooms, as well as a spa and pool area on the lower ground floor. Construction started about two months ago and will take three years to construct until final completion in late 2019. From the top you can see as far as Richmond Hill on the complete opposite side of London and out into the sea! Three years is a long time to wait but we think it's worth waiting for.

Welcome back viewers to yet another post on the future of London. 100 Bishopsgate, a fascinating new development in the heart of London, is up now. Prepare to be amazed:

4. 100 Bishopsgate

This is a new development of two mixed-use high-rises literally a stone's throw away from The Gherkin and The Cheese Grater. It will really embrace the style and shape of the other city skyscrapers. This Super Scraper is designed specifically to match its fellow Scrapers in the City and coordinate with its style and shape. Its height even lines up with the shoulder of Tower 42. The building is an expensive one and is looking for an owner, from the top, viewers can see as far out as the sea (or so its said). The building is made up of a 40-storey and a 7-storey building. The lower tower sticks out to give people below that it is twisting. Originally, the tower was set to be a lot taller, yet the plans did not go ahead since it would create a flat skyline with The Gherkin and The Heron Tower. Despite being the smallest of the bunch, we absolutely adore the design and shape and can't wait till its completion.

In the beating heart of a changing area in Nine Elms, City Tower will rise high amongst Vauxhall and Battersea changing the London skyline forever. Let's have a look:

3. City Tower

Another masterpiece in the making by KPF this brilliant looking skyscraper it is the tallest of two towers adjacent to one another in the same complex. With it complete it will become one of the tallest (and the nicest) residential buildings in the UK and London. It was originally brought just south of the Thames in the borough of Wandsworth. Yet former mayor Boris Johnson declared that it should be re-designed and the skybridge linking the two buildings should be scrapped. The taller of the buildings will be called City Tower and the other called River Tower. City Tower is residential and the other is a hotel. City Tower reaches an astonishing height of 199m and the other 161m, making it one of the tallest buildings in London. And with that over, on behalf of myself and TSS have a good morning. Stay cool, stay tuned and keep Super Scraping!!!

The new skyscraper complex in Vauxhall. The tallest being City Tower, note 'The Tower' Saint George's wharf in the background. You can see Vauxhall Bridge and the MI5 Building behind. If you look closely you can see the London eye as the river bends round into the city. To the far left there are the Canary Wharf and City skyscrapers.

Let's return back to the future as we look at this very interesting skyscraper and my personal favourite.

2. The Scalpel

Just when you thought the city was full enough, Kohn Pedersen Fox released the designs for a new sky-scraper to be completed next year in the same block as its fellow Super Scrapers: The Cheesegrater, Gherkin and the Walkie Talkie as well as its proposed cousins: The Pinnacle, 100 Bishopsgate and lots more. Upon completion it will stand at 190m tall, with 38 stories making it just a bit taller than Tower 42. It will consist of a shop at ground floor, a restaurant and a retail department as well as 16 lifts! Its truly awesome design resembles that of the Freedom Tower in New York and will literally scrape the sky. We can't wait for this one. Well, it kind of goes without saying really.

LONDON FUTURE: THE CITY BY 2020:

This special post shows you all of the skyscrapers in the proposal and construction stages that will inhabit London by the turn of the decade:

1. Newfoundland
Newfoundland will have easy transport links, with DLR,
Canary Wharf tube station and bus links just around the corner.
The solely residential Newfoundland Tower is currently under construction in Westferry Circus in Canary Wharf, London. It is due to be completed by 2018 and started construction very recently. It will be tall for a London skyscraper, at 218m, and on completion would be the 2nd tallest building in Canary Wharf and 5th tallest in London. Its neo-futuristic, slightly irregular fashion would not follow the stylistic routine of the traditional Canary Wharf style of Art-Deco geometry based concrete structures, but would still look beautiful along the river bank, with fascinating and potentially romantic views for its tenants.

THE WALKIE TALKIE

A Fiat melted by the Walkie Scorchie.

The fascinating Walkie Talkie building is an icon of London. It's not one of the tallest skyscrapers, but it's still one of the most interesting:

1. It's sloped design means the sun's rays slide off it and onto parked cars and underneath, melting them as a consequence. Architects are doing all they can to fix the dilemma also known as the "Walkie-Scorchie". They didn't think of that!

2.  The pulchritudinous, subtropical "sky gardens" on the top three floors of the building are going to be the hottest ticket in town; it will provide one of the most amazing panoramic views in London and will have spectacular plants inside.

3. The 35th floor will have a luxury restaurant with a fantastic champagne bar and seafood grill.

4. It is one of the few buildings which is broader on the top half than the bottom.

5. It is planned to use 21 million kilowatts of electricity per year, which may sound like lots, however it's actually 10% less than most other buildings of it's size.

THE LEADENHALL BUILDING

The Leadenhall Building is a now iconic attraction of Central London. Let's have a look at it:

1. It has earned the nickname "The Cheese Grater" after it's distinct shape.

2. It is topped out but on completion it will become the 4th tallest building in London, and the UK.

3. The original building on the site, completed in 1969, was only 54 metres high. This one is 225 m!

4. Peter Rees, a City of London Corporation planning officer first invented the nickname "The Cheese Grater" after he told the architect, Richard Rogers, that he could: "imagine his wife using it to grate parmesan!"

5. It was made in the shape of a cheese grater so people could still see St Paul's Cathedral and that I didn't block the view stating back to an old law that you were supposed to be able to see St Paul's from everywhere in London.

ONE CANADA SQUARE

One Canada Square just missed the top spot as tallest building in the UK. Let's find out more about this staggering second-placer:

1. It is the second tallest building in the UK, after the Shard.

2. For 20 years it held the title of tallest building in the UK, from 1990 to 2010.

3. The building is sometimes known as "The Vertical Fleet Street" after many of the newspaper offices moved from Fleet Street in London to One Canada Square.

4. Very briefly, One Canada Square was the tallest building in Europe until MesseTurm in Frankfurt stole its title after less a year.

5. The flashing, red light on the roof of One Canada Square is a well-known warning that it is there when aeroplanes are coming into London City Airport.

THE SHARD

The Shard is currently the tallest building in Europe. Here are a few fun facts:

1. The Shard may be the tallest building in Europe, but not for long, after the Mercury City Tower in Moscow was topped out in 2013 and is due to fully completed soon.

2. The Shard is the 63rd tallest building in the world so there's something to be proud of, London!

3. It is currently the tallest building in the UK and will be keeping that title for the foreseeable future.

4. It has many functions, and is the proud home of the 5 star Shangri La Hotel.

5. It is only a part of the development known as London Bridge Quarter, and the development is complete by a series of mini glass buildings surrounding the Shard known as "Shardettes".
