Taipei 101

A fantastic, once record-breaking towering height in the urban depths of Taiwan, this stupefying skyscraper is one of our favourites and incredibly interesting:

1. It's familiar postmodern stacked basket shape was taken from a Chinese pagoda.

2. It was awarded the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) platinum certificate for being the world's tallest and largest officially green building for it's design and little pollution in it's construction.

3. Once the tallest building in the world after being overtaken by the Burj Khalifa (828 m, our next post), it is an inspirational example of a geometric design with a story behind it. For example, it has 101 floors as its name implies, and the people of Taiwan use it as the world's tallest sundial to tell the time.

4. It is built to strongly withstand Asia-Pacific tremors and typhoons and has survived many a long season of Category 4 and 5 storms.

5. 2 weeks before opening, Toshiba installed the world's fastest elevator, running at over a kilometre a minute. It's so fast there has to be a depressurisation system in it!

6. Chinese New Year (a very important day in Oriental culture) fireworks in Taiwan take place at the tower; it is an astounding spectacle for people from all corners of the globe.
